Plumpy Nut is a program that operates in conjunction with the Medical Clinic. The program fights malnutrition with a small bar packed with nutrients. This program has proven very successful for the chidren of Juampas.

Our Plumpy’nut program is working to fight malnutrition in Juampas.  The product is a high protein and high energy peanut-based paste in a foil wrapper, similar to an energy bar. Plumpy’nut requires no water preparation or refrigeration and has a 2 year shelf life, making it easy to deploy in places like the central plateau in Haiti.  It is distributed by Dr. Waking to parents of the malnourished child.  While HOPEH does distribute food as an added intervention, this program is essential in fighting malnutrition.

How It Works

Plumpy’nut is sort of a miracle product. It helps with rapid weight gain, which can make the difference between life and death for a young child.  The product is also easy for children to eat since they can feed themselves the soft paste. The fortified peanut butter-like paste contains a balance of fats, carbohydrates and proteins, and vitamins and minerals.  Peanuts contain ‘monounsaturated fats’, which are easy to digest.  They are also very high in calories, which mean that a child will get a lot of energy from just small amounts, important because malnutrition shrinks the stomach.  They are rich in zinc and protein — both good for the immune system and to aid long bone growth in reversing stunted height, while protein is also needed for muscle development.  Peanuts are also a good source of vitamin E, an antioxidant that helps to convert food into energy.

Conclusions and Costs

There is still a long way to go though before childhood malnutrition rates significantly decrease.  The key to fighting malnourishment will require a combination of efforts such as improvements in education and women's rights, agricultural advances, amongst others.  Plumpy’nut plays an important part in putting an end to hunger in children and HOPEH is proud to support this program in Juampas.  The cost of this program is $5000 per year.  Your contribution is vital to the long term success of the Plumpy’nut program and the end of malnutrition.
